Okay, today is Black Friday. I’ve already written this week about how much I loathe Black Friday. I’ve also asked if you might join in on #BrightSaturday, supporting your local businesses. In the spirit of the colour element of that, then these are five books about bringing brightness and colour to your cooking and baking.
Okay, this is full of colour frippery and indulgence in one book. If you’ve got kids or unicorn lovers, then this is going to be ideal. Go out and find your local cake decorating supplies shop and stock up on every sprinkle going. If you’re going to work through this book, you’re going to need them.
Well, this cake would brighten up on a day, not just a Saturday. Not everything is a big cake; there are cookies, cupcakes and desserts as well. Find that same cake decorating supplies shop and stock up on your colours; I guarantee that there will be plenty of use for them.
I would buy this purely for the photography. I imagine looking at these images will just cheer up the dullest of days. If you actually went on to make any of them…well, that’s just gilding the lily. Not all of them are sweet, so there’s a beef and bearnaise tart that I would definitely consider. But I could follow that up quite happily with a rose and lychee tart. Pretty and tasty, perfect combination.
I love the principle of this book, as I definitely buy into getting kids to try as many foods as possible, as early as possible. Different colours, textures and tastes are what it’s all about. Some great inspiration in here, for things like pinky porridge or broccoli fritters. I can imagine even my big kids tucking into some of these.
This is one to bookmark for January, for all your new good intentions on eating well. Consider it the grown-up version of the Little Pip book. There is plenty of evidence that eating a broad range of different coloured foods is good for you. Not to mention avoiding beige food. So once the mince pies have all gone, maybe settle down and have a read of this one.
So, let’s cook and bake bright this weekend! Especially if you can get out there and support local businesses when you’re buying your ingredients. Make #BrightSaturday something special this weekend.
