Best not get me started on this week’s government advice on drinking (if you’re reading this in 2013, it’s probably different anyway), but like my approach to food, I believe if you’re going to drink then drink something proper and good, not sugared water with colours and alcohol.
Which is why, as I picked up a decent piece of rib eye steak for supper, I thought I should have something good to enjoy whilst cooking it. The rib eye came from the Welbeck Farm Shop, and the accompanying tipple is Portland Black from Welbeck Abbey Brewery.
Still less than a year old, the range of beers being brewed by Welbeck seems to be growing. Portland Black, as the name suggests, is a black beer, described somewhere between a dark mild and a porter. It does look like if you want to try it, then you’ll have to stop by the Welbeck Farm Shop, which trust me is no hardship, or book on a brewery trip. Or a course at the School of Artisan Food. All that, and great beer too. Worth a detour to Worksop. Look it up!
