The bees have been in their luxury home in the beautiful surroundings of BFF’s lovely garden for just two weeks, and today the first honey came out!
I’m not sure if this is technically the right equipment, or if doing it in the garden qualifies as a bee and wasp free environment. Given we were just about to sit down to lunch outside, I was a little concerned. But look how gorgeous it looks:
This is the paler of the two lots of honey, and was less tasty. According to the resident beekeepers, this is mainly from rapeseedoil blossom. Whereas the second lot had a lot more colour and taste, and is more from the varied wildflowers around the house.
This is now all being double sieved and then will be put into jars. Quite a lot went back to the hive to keep the bees happy/thriving. In the meantime, I’m building up a list of honey based recipes to work my way through. If you have one to share, be thrilled to hear from you. More to follow on this I’m quite sure!
Oh, and if you have a wannabe or even experienced beekeeper, then I take it from the giggles and stifled guffaws at bedtime that Bill Turnbull’s The Bad Beekeeper’s Club: How I Stumbled into the Curious World of Bees – and Became (perhaps) a Better Person is quite amusing. He might be a better person but I doubt it has done much for his dancing!
