Not how I want to do my bargain hunting!

Just a quick one to highlight some offers from good online retailers for foodie gifts, for someone else or yourself! There’s quite a lot of chocolate offers around, particularly useful to get organised ready for Easter. Here you go:

    * Get 10% off at Chocolate Trading Co on Easter goodies with code Easter10, which is valid through till 30 April. Check out the skateboarding chocolate bunny and the chocolate filled hens eggs.

    * One of my favourite (and there are a few) chocolate companies, Montezuma’s are offering free postage when you spend over £30 between now and midnight on Friday 19th March, with code CHEEKY688. It has to be Monster Bunnies and a Radical Stack, please!

    * Definitely a case of one for them and one for you with Thorntons, as there is a free gift of a 400g box of Continental chocolates when you spend £15 or more. Build up your £15 spend, add the box of chocs (product code 3054) and then add code EST1 at checkout. Offer ends March 21st. Go on, make all the kids, big and small, happy and order them in their own personalised eggs. There’s everything from dark to white chocolate, so every taste should be covered.

    * A quick one to act on, but there is free delivery from Urban Outfitters at the moment, until midnight Thursday, with orders over £50. Great for funky kitchens and unusual gifts, like the Soldier Egg Cup & Toast Cutter or the Wonder Woman apron. Come on, lets not take our food too seriously, all the time!

So, catch up quick on some bargains. Or at least some serious chocolate stockholding!

Just a quick post on online retailers of good foodie stuff with good offers, in case you need a gift but with some cash left for day to day eating! Here goes:

Kissing Birds Free Gift from Thorntons

    1. Thorntons have a free gift on offer for orders over £15 between now and the 14th, so a great one for the one for them, one for you principle. The free gift is the Kissing Birds, which is cute looking, and possibly tasty. I really like the chocolate blocks they have done, colourful and tasty. Enter code THKS at checkout to qualify.

    2. I love how Majestic announce their offers: 25% off South Africa. Apparently it does just mean the wines! Great saving though when you buy two bottles. Possibly champagne discounts will follow next week if Valentine’s Day sales aren’t as good as they were hoping!

    3. I do like my coffee, but good coffee. If you’ve got a caffeine freak, then how about joining them up to the Coffee Tasting Club from Coffee Cavern. It’s now available for £22.50 for 3 months, rather than £30, for which they will send 4 different coffees every month from single estates and co-operatives, along with tasting notes. A perfect pick you up gift.

    4. Natoora is a great source for continental goodies from Italy and France amongst others. If you need to plan a big shop, then right now they are offering £20 off when you spend £80. The offer runs until 28 February, and you just need code HT785KE at checkout. Not sure I know where to start, but I would certainly be looking at their interesting wine and beer selection, and some San Daniele ham for sure.

    5. There can never be enough fabulous chocolate in a home, and Chocolate Trading Co is a great source for finding great stuff. Just to ease some of the guilt, there is 10% off everything at the moment with code love, and it’s valid through till the end of this month. Deep joy!

    6. If it’s too cold, or there’s still snow, then stay warm and safe and shop at the Virtual Farmers Market. Great selection of all kinds of producers from around the UK, and for all of February delivery is completely free, so got to be worth a go. And worth staying in for! Check out goodies from Gower Cottage Brownies, South Devon Chilli Farm and Upton Smokery amongst many other tasty choices!

Six great choices of places to shop, six great discounts. Happy shopping/cooking/eating!

Chocolate has had a reputation as an aphrodisiac all the way back to at least Montezuma, if not further, so it seems only appropriate that there is a lot of the stuff being given at Valentine’s Day. For those that a half pound box from Tesco is going to leave you very much out in the cold, here are some romantic and yet incredibly tasty choices.

  • I’ve written about Montezuma’s many times, and their chocolate tends to be somewhere in the house! If you need a good introduction, then order the Box of Love for your loved one, and hope they share. Rather keen on the sound of the Sweet Harmony Giant Truffle.
  •

  • For a step up in terms of sophistication of presentation, and possibly taste, then the Chocolate Trading Co is a great source for chocolate by Michel Cluizel, one of the great chocolatiers. I love this Je t’aime Gift Box, which is definitely quality but not quantity, but they look fabulous and will no doubt be delicious.
  •

  • Artisan du Chocolat have so many wonderful flavours to choose from, that it’s very hard to do so! Going to go with something a little bit different, and suggest you order their Love Potion N9. A cup of this hot chocolate could be incredibly bewitching, and perfect for if Valentine’s Day turns chilly. The weather that is, rather than the atmosphere.
  •

  • Lips & Nipples

Not new, but a saucy box of Rococo’s Venus Nipples & Lips will always induce a smile on Valentine’s Day, and they tend not to stick around for long! Maybe add a few bars of their delicious chocolate as well. I particularly love the Earl Grey one.

  • I know nothing about Curious Chocolate, other than the lovely people at Pedlars think it’s good enough for them to list. If I was going to try it, then I would buy a box of Caramel Sea Salt Chocolates. Perfect for foodies who love those amazing mixes of salty and sweet.
  •

If you leave it too late to order online, then certainly Waitrose have a great selection of good chocolate brands, and Hotel Chocolat have a growing number of standalone stores.  That may even be open on a Sunday. Just don’t leave it to the last minute. Don’t buy the reduced Christmas stock. And don’t give an Easter Egg instead!

Not how I want to do my bargain hunting!

Not how I want to do my bargain hunting!

I think it’s possibly a little later than last year, but there seem to be a lot of last minute offers flying in from my favourite online sources for great foodie gifts. Rather than a raft of short posts I thought I would pull them all together in one post, so that you could get everything out of the way at once. Look, it’s that or face the crowds, and I know which I would rather do!

    1. For foodie stocking fillers, I would check out Getting Personal for things like personalised Food Lovers calendar, a personalised Great Taste Award winning chocolate pudding or a personalised apron. This is a great place for fun, but not tacky, stuff for all members of the family, and friends, and price range means you can get something interesting for under £10. If you spend over £100, then you get 15% off, enter FIFTEEN at checkout.

    2. For a huge range of unique, unusual and tasty foodie gifts, then check out the Deal of the Day page over on Big Barn. From beef boxes to vegan chocolate cakes, Loch Leven tablet to meaty sausages, there really is something for everybody. The other plus point would be that your gift would be supporting artisanal producers around the country, which is a great gift for everyone. Check in daily for new offers.

    3. I really love the collection put together by the team at Jamie Oliver, and right now if you spend over £35 delivery is free. These are a bit different to things available under Jamie’s name elsewhere on the High Street, and there’s some great choices. For under £10, there are some very stylish tea towels and notebooks, and for under £20 I love the worm food compost bucket, and the I Love Olives gift set. Even though I don’t!

    4. Cook in Style is a great online source for kitchen gadgets and gizmos, big and small. Not only do you get free delivery when you spend over £75, but you also get a free gift worth £15. So, that’s either two gifts for the price of one, or one for them and one for you! If they really wanted a breadmaker, this may be a good time to get it!

    5. It wouldn’t be Christmas without chocolate, and Chocolate Trading Co is one of my favourite sources for unusual, good quality chocolate. They are offering 10% off between now and December 8th, enter code santa in the shopping basket. If you’re not too sure what to order, then there are some great new chocolates on offer from them, post here.

    6. Not so much a gift for someone else, but a gift to whoever is responsible for the lunch on Christmas Day, the Christmas meal boxes at Natoora are fabulous. All the thinking is done, the recipe is there and right now there is 10% off the boxes and everything else that you orderwhen you put one of these in the basket. Valid until 20 December, so it would ensure you don’t go hungry on Christmas Day, and you can stock up on great gifts, such as Rococo Chocolates, some Prosecco on standby and a huge piece of Parmesan.

    7. There are guys everywhere secretly hankering after a home brew kit, so make his day this year! The Online Homebrew Company are offering a Woodfordes Wherry Micro Brewery, which would allow you to brew 40 pints as a starting point. But right now he can get well brewed up for New Year’s Eve as they are offering an extra Wherry Kit with each one. So that would be 80 pints. That would be some hangover!

So a lucky 7 of bargains that would hopefully keep you in the warmth at home, rather than heading out into the cold to battle with the crowds. Possibly more to come though I would guess before the festive season is upon us.

Dark chocolate ganache from Michel Cluizel

Dark chocolate ganache from Michel Cluizel

I really like the Chocolate Trading Co as a source for slightly unusual but really great quality chocolate, and delighted to see some fantastic new products from them in time for Christmas.

From master chocolatier Michel Cluizel comes a single estate Dark Ganache Box, which I certainly wouldn’t say no to. Twenty five fabulous bites of ganache from five of the world’s finest plantations then with additional flavours to knock your socks off! And just to keep it looking extra special, even a little festive, decoration includes edible gold and silver. Very precious, but very delicious!

Valrhona are bringing additional temptation to Christmas with their Chocolate Temptation Box. I don’t know where to start on the delicious flavours they’ve included here! I’m particularly keen to try the dark chocolate with pear and bergamot chocolate ganache.

Want something a little less serious, and perhaps a little less cash? Well certainly less cash but truly luxurious would be the Amedei Crema Toscana chocolate spread. Of course Nutella is cheaper, but this is something else: finest milk chocolate with hazelnuts but without hydrogenated fats or artificial flavours. An absolute treat and at £8.95 not a bad gift for under £10.

And for something a little different looking and a bit of fun then try the chocolate spoons from The Chocolate Maker. The bronze and silver dark chocolate spoons look lovely, but if they feel too gimmicky then there are some plain dark chocolate spoons too. They’d add a certain something to post dinner coffee, or a totally indulgent hot chocolate.

Definitely worth a browse through, and deliveries come through DHL so even if more postal disputes happen then the chocolate will get through!

Fabulous chocolate hampers from Chocolate Trading Co

Fabulous chocolate hampers from Chocolate Trading Co

It’s getting to that time of year when I get inundated with emails about hampers, and I often wonder who buys them. There’s the big corporate buyers, and I would think that a good hamper would be well received by many people. Even if you didn’t get the whole hamper, everyone on a team could get a share. Which you couldn’t say about the linen bedsheets I got given one year by a supplier, but that’s a whole different story.

I think there are the hamper that supplement your Christmas eating, or stock up your cupboards for January. You see these quite often with people like Park, or Webb Ivory. I have to say that browsing the Park website I was horrified at the Kids Treat frozen food hamper. Put it this way, I don’t think they’d get Jamie Oliver to endorse it. But you could put something like this together yourself, and I can picture my mum doing this for my grandparents. You can do stuff someone loves, or something they might have been wanting to try, or any theme you can care to choose.

And then there’s the stuff that’s just a great foodie indulgence, and there’s just so much variety around now, of every theme and price tag. There are so many choices, and I’m not going to list the obvious ones (if you’ve got the money for Harrods, you don’t need to be reading this) but here’s some thoughts from me on where to go and what I’d be looking at:

Chocolate Trading Co – some serious hampers for the serious chocolate lover. You can create your own, or there are some good selections already there including dark chocolate and organic chocolate. Or, if it’s only the chocolate that needs to be seriously good, then you could try the Fun & Funky hamper.

FunkyHampers.com - kind of does what it says on the tin! I would say this is not so much for the foodie, but a gift for someone difficult to choose for! Not just for Christmas, as they do great new home and new baby hampers. They are quite chocolate based but are good quality choc and nice accessories, not tat.

Ethical Superstore – a good stop for green foodies, the hampers here cover fair trade, organic and eco-friendly options. I like the Taste Of options, which include Italian, Indian and African versions. For the party animals though, I might be tempted to choose the Beer’n'Nuts Party Pack!

The Fish Society – if I had to fill my freezer up, then I’d choose to do it with fish, and The Fish Society have some great options. There are everyday versions, but if it’s for Christmas than have a look at the luxury version, which includes turbot and Dover sole, or the smoked fish version with smoked tuna as well as the more usual smoked salmon.

London Fine Foods Group – this is real foodie’s territory! I would say this was ideal hunting ground for fabulous stuff to make up a hamper with a difference for a real gourmet. I also really love the Cheese Towers, perfect for a cheese lover. Mind you, I always wanted to send a whole Iberian Ham on the bone, just to see their faces as they tried to guess what it was!

TeaWorld – for a country of tea lovers, this could be the perfect choice, but not if you’re after just your average cup of builders. There are easy tea gifts and more connoisseur selections, covering all kinds of tea from Liquorice through to chais and herbal teas.

Pong – this is a great place for cheese lovers and experimenters. Again, pick your own or choose from gift boxes such as the Ultimate Pong Box or the Chef’s Selection. Not a long lasting gift, but very tasty whilst it lasts!

Needless to say I would think all the high street and grocers will offer versions of hampers in the run up to Christmas, but these are just a few to allow you to find something a little bit different for your gift choices this year. And I think the answer these days is yes, I possibly would buy a hamper. Just not one that involved turkey twizzlers.
