It’s a few years since I wrote about eating up the festive leftovers, but my mission to have less food waste from this house continues. The freezer and I have a good relationship now, and I discovered a great tip about writing on masking tape and putting them onto the boxes to go in the freezer. Fantastic tip.
I think planning and organisation are still your best friends on this mission (not to mention necessity, as all of us feel the squeeze in one way or another). I’m not big on meal planning, but have done it. What I do like is to always have a thought about what next. Leftover mashed potato? There’ll be potato cakes the next night. It’s about thinking slightly ahead, and I guess having some skills to do so. Or a great stock of recipe books to inspire you.
Lakeland and John Lewis are my go to shops for stuff to help with this, although I have a growing fondness for TK Maxx as well as charity shops for vintage containers for dry stuff. The more visible you can make stuff, the less likely it is to fester away at the back of somewhere.
The other useful things are the compost bin, and also the Green Cone Food Digester. We’ve got on fairly well with this, although I don’t think last summer was really ideal conditions for it. It does mean that there is is less going in the dustbin, and hopefully it is doing the garden some good. But still I’d like there to be less heading out there in the first place. Still, every little helps, I guess. On with the fight!
