Making Your Own – Retro Sweetie Bags

August 16th, 2010 · No Comments · British favourites, Christmas foodie gifts, Foodie gifts, Foodie things to do, Make your own, Sweet treats

I’m a huge fan of John Lewis, and contribute to their staff bonus in quite large amounts each year. On a scouting session this weekend to see what was new I found a very attractive display of retro sweets, in bags and jars.

With what felt like comparatively large price tags for the effort. For example, £2.50 for 150g of Drumstick lollies, which I would think is about 8 or 9 lollies. Now, I know they’re probably not 10p each anymore, but even so. A 40g bag of Flying Saucers would set you back the same amount. And half a kilo of sweets would be £8.

And we’re not talking about fancy packaging. I mean, I know I have sent A Quarter Of’s retro hampers before (great gift for difficult to buy for teenagers, foodie or otherwise), but they come in decent packaging. This is a bag with a bit of ribbon, not exactly hard to replicate. I mean, you can buy 900g worth of Drumsticks from Retro Tuck Shop for £4.50, which would give you 45 lollies to repack.

As I thought, Lakeland can furnish us with suitable cellophane bags at £2.69 for 50, so adding little over 5p per bag. If you’re a great hoarder like me then you’re bound to have scraps of ribbon/baler twine/string around for the final flourish. So I would say go buy sweets in quantity (check out your local market too) and then get busy. I’ve said it before but this is the sort of thing kids would love to help to do and kids, big and small, would love to receive.
