Making the right choices

One size fits all

As you might have gathered by now, I rather like my food. You might even recall my not terrible successful weeks with Slimming World. Well, I still like my food and my trousers are not getting any looser. Which is why I am part of the Foodie Twitter Weigh In for at least 6 weeks. If you so desire, you can follow our exploits on Twitter with the hashtag #ftwi.

I have always love food more than I’ve obsessed about my weight, and I don’t want to either. Also I don’t want MGG to grow up with a weight obsession, and that pressure is starting already, even at 8. I think it’s really important to enjoy a widely varied diet, and it’s the moderation bit that is most helpful. Not to mention moving a bit!

Now most of us don’t know the exact calorie content of everything passing in front of us, but have a vague idea of what’s a good idea to eat or not. I have to say I am hugely in favour of  restaurants showing calorie counts, but not all restaurants. I mean, if you’ve managed to get to a table at The Fat Duck then you really shouldn’t be worrying about the calorie content of dinner, but if you’re just popping into Pizza Express, then you might want some guidance as to whether you making a fat or thin choice!

I mean, The Real Greek helps me to know that a chicken skewer is actually more calories than the halloumi one. Or that rice with it might not be the best side dish. There are more and more places doing it, and I guess you can use the information or ignore it, your choice, but it’s nice to have a choice.

You could carry round a pocket calorie guide, or even a pocket electronic version. There are no doubt iPhone apps as well. Or you could get Paul McKenna to talk to you about your relationship with food. I would just never want to obsess about it. So moving my sorry arse more has to be the other side of the coin. Do whatever you can, all the old corny stuff about walking up the stairs, getting off the bus a stop early, the usual.

In the meantime, my measure of success will be a pair of size 14 jeans from Hobbs that have been stuck inside the wardrobe for a good 12 months. Progress to follow!

I’ve downloaded myfitnesspal app onto my phone (they also have a website) Not that I’m calorie counting or anything I’m using it more as a food diary. I was shocked at the cals of somethings I thought of as being healthy!

Got to love technology! Helping to make good choices easier has to be a good thing!
