Is there anything Amazon don’t sell?

July 8th, 2010 · No Comments · Foodie gifts, Places to shop online

It was big news yesterday, that Amazon were now taking on the supermarkets in their own territory of food. Generally, I really like Amazon: selection is good, service is good, prices are good. But food?

Well, it could be great, bringing us goods that are hard to find and source here. But actually, how much is really that hard to find now? In someways, it’s great to have everything under one roof/account, so I could buy everything from table settings to steaks to cookbooks to inspire me how to cook them, all with one payment. Some seem to work perfectly fine. For example, Donald Russell meat is the same price, and the same shipping costs as if you bought it through their own site.

Not everything seems to work like that though. Need Panko breadcrumbs? Well, you can buy them from Wing Yip Stores on Amazon for £3.69 for 340g, and delivery will set you back an eye watering £6.97. Or you could order them directly from their own website for £2.95 and £5.99 on delivery. That seems quite a difference to me, and not the way you would expect pricing on Amazon to be.

Some go the other way. Order a tin of Eminent Earl Grey from The London Tea Company, and the tea itself will cost you £3.99 from their site, or Amazon’s. Ordering from them on Amazon though will save you 50p on delivery. Very odd.

So, a mixed bunch, and early days (it is labelled as a beta release), so will be very interesting to see what happens. In the meantime, I would suggest shopping around to make sure you are getting what you want at the best price. At a guess, if you have a choice, I would imagine buying direct benefits the producer more in cash terms.
