You may or may not know today is Armed Forces Day. You will probably know that there have been a lot of casualties this week. You may wonder what this has to do with food?
I think there’s something about the power of food and drink to speak to us so deeply of home. Whenever you hear troops being interviewed about what they miss about home, straight after their families and friends comes their favourite food and drink. Could be anything, often hear it being curry, their mum’s roast dinner or a cold lager.
So we could use food to celebrate this day, as those of us who are lucky to be around our friends and family can cook up those tastes of home. You could head out to one of the many events around the country, or hold one of your own. You could head out to the bookshop and buy a copy of the Help for Heroes cookbook.
Or go on the Help for Heroes website and buy Caley’s Heroes Chocolate Bars and Hot Chocolate. The chocolate is fair trade and high cocoa, and available in plain or milk chocolate. And chocolate milk is just is delicious when it’s cooled down, so no excuse that it’s too hot for hot chocolate!
And if you’re going to have a BBQ over this glorious weekend, then for once I’m going to ask you to go Tesco and buy a pack of A.Turner & Sons bangers, as The Hair of the Hog and Pickled Pig, as 5p from every pack goes to Help for Heroes. It’s not a huge amount but, as they say at Tesco, every little helps.
There’ll be much talk of heroes over the next two days in the sporting context. Lets take a moment today to remember some real heroes.
