Dr T's Plan Bee

Or alternatively, this is where I’ll tell you about the honey!

Yes, Dr T has taken Plan Bee to heart and is doing his bit to save the honey bee. Along with Best Foodie Friend’s Fella (BFFF) he has taken to wandering around the place with an increasing collection of weird looking tools. At least when the hive arrived I could identify what it was! Although it didn’t quite match up my romantic image of a white wooden hive with an apex roof, but he tells me this is the Rolls Royce of bee hives.

It is beautiful and, being cedarwood and new, it smells divine at the moment. If you like woody scents. It has a home, and a great deal of activity to seed a lot of additional wild flowers that will make the bees happy. In fact these look in danger of being the most pampered bees ever.

Except there aren’t any. It’s a beeless hive.

Which does seem to rather defeat the object. But I’m told they will order them soon. And they’ll probably arrive by post. Which may worry the post lady. Should you have 60,000 honey bees going spare, let me know!

In the meantime, my part in this is a) don’t laugh at them in their suits and b) find interesting recipes using honey in lots of different ways. I have already clocked up a monumental fail against a so hoping that my own plan b is more successful. No doubt more to follow.

Should you be wondering whether to give it a try yourself, then The British Beekeepers Association have been incredibly helpful and a mine of information. And if you’re intrigued as to why it’s an issue if the bees disappear, then I recommend a read of A World Without Bees.
