Friday Five – Cookbooks for the year ahead

January 4, 2013 By Helen Tarver Leave a Comment

I’ve not made any resolutions as such, as I’m not really big on them, and have quite enough change going on this year anyway. But I’ve started to think about things I want to cook or bake, or the ways that cooking for the household might evolve this year. So here’s my five for a new year and new cooking:

The crock pot connoisseur - great cookbook gift for a food lover who loves their slow cooker

The Crock Pot Connoisseur: Delicious Slow Cooker Recipes for (Very) Busy People – I’m thinking of investing in a slow cooker, so there is always a hot dinner ready for MGG and I. It’s a bit of kit I’ve not owned before so thought might need some great starting points.

The Food of Morocco - great cookbook gift for a food lover

The Food of Morocco – I love Moroccan food, and think I’d like to cook more of it. So rather than trying to tackle lots of different things this year, I thought maybe when I cooked to experiment at the weekend for example, that I’d just work through the one, truly delicious cuisine. I’ve seen some of the recipes from this book and they look delicious.

The Accidental Vegetarian - great gift for a food lover who wants to have some meat free days

The Accidental Vegetarian – I’m planning on having meat free Mondays at some point in the year and given it’s probably 20 years since I was a vegetarian then I might need some inspiration to ensure it’s not just pasta and pesto. Or just nut roast. I like this one for a starting point.

Everyday and Sunday

Everyday and Sunday Recipes from Riverford Farm – I bought this one for someone else, and have often thought I should add this to my collection. I plan to cook even more seasonally, particularly with a veggie day a week, and these recipes are definitely geared up to that, plus the additional, occasional roast dinner.

food from plenty

Food from Plenty – I think the secondary title sums up a lot of my plans: good food made from the plentiful, the seasonal and the leftover. Perfect. I am hoping to have a lot less food waste this year, not to mention the seasonal eating as per the previous book. I love Diana Henry’s writing, so can see this getting an awful lot of use too.

Will be an interesting culinary journey this year, and maybe these will be good starting point, potentially good allies and guides. What about you? Any food changes in your household this year? Or any books inspiring you to do something different?
