As I scraped the last of the wholegrain mustard from the jar, it made me reflect that I am very unadventurous when it comes to mustard. I am not a massive fan of English mustard, or smooth mustards in general, but I wouldn’t dream of making a salad dressing without wholegrain mustard, and love a mustard sauce with a piece of smoked haddock for a great comforting supper.
I tend to always buy the same French brand of wholegrain, and wondered if I should explore further. I like the sound of Cusacks’ Grain Beer Mustard, with its spices, honey and Dorking Brewery Ale. I imagine it would go well with the Christmas ham. Or even an Easter one. It definitely feels like it should be something that there are plenty of British companies in, but have to admit that it’s quite hard to find many, or certainly ones that you would find easy to shop for from the comfort of your own home.
With the long history of English mustard maybe it’s only a matter of time before there are more makers, or am I missing some good ones? Would love to find some if you know of any!
